The Olive Harvest in Brist: Autumn on the Makarska Riviera

    2026-08-095 min

There is a quieter season on the Makarska Riviera that most visitors never see. Once the peak-summer crowds thin out, autumn settles over Brist with soft light, an empty beach and the biggest event in our family's year: the olive harvest. For many of us it is the best time of all to be here.

Our olive trees have stood on the hills above Brist for generations, and every October we pick them by hand. The olives are pressed the same day and left completely unheated, which is what gives the oil its bright, grassy and gently peppery character. It is slow, familiar work, and the whole village smells of fresh oil for weeks.

The sea barely notices that summer has ended. The Adriatic holds its warmth well into October, so the swimming carries on long after the beach has emptied. Mornings are for a quiet dip with hardly anyone around, and the light on the sea turns soft and golden earlier in the day.

Autumn also opens up the things that are too hot in high summer. The climb up Biokovo is comfortable rather than punishing, the Skywalk views are at their clearest, and long meals move back outdoors without the midday heat. It is wine season on the nearby Pelješac peninsula too.

And you are welcome to join the harvest. Each October we open the groves to a few guests who want to pick alongside us, share a picnic of local favourites in the shade of the trees and taste the season's first cold-pressed oil. It is the kind of slow, hands-in-the-earth morning that stays with people long after they leave.

Brist makes an easy base for all of it: quieter and better value than high summer, with the warm sea, the mountain and the groves all within reach. Come in autumn, and you see the Makarska Riviera the way the people who live here love it most.
