Medjugorje and Kravice Falls: A Day Trip from Brist

    2026-08-095 min

Some of the most memorable day trips from Brist cross the border into neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina. Medjugorje, one of the world's most visited pilgrimage sites, and the emerald Kravice Falls sit close together inland, and the two make a natural pair for a single unforgettable day.

Getting there is easy. Medjugorje is about an hour by car from Brist, down the coastal road and across a single border crossing into Bosnia. Bring your passport or ID card, as you are leaving the EU. In the quieter months of spring and autumn the crossing is usually quick, while summer Saturdays can mean a longer wait, so an early start pays off.

Medjugorje has drawn millions of visitors since 1981, when six local children reported visions of the Virgin Mary. At its heart stands St James Church, and above the village rise two gentle climbs: Apparition Hill (Podbrdo), where the first visions were reported, and Cross Mountain (Krizevac), crowned by a large white cross. Even if you come simply out of curiosity, the calm and reflective atmosphere is striking.

A short drive of around 30 minutes from Medjugorje brings you to Kravice Falls, a wide horseshoe of cascades tumbling some 25 metres into a broad emerald pool on the Trebizat River. In summer you can swim beneath the falls, and small cafes along the bank make it an easy place to linger over lunch. In spring the falls are at their most powerful, fed by the snowmelt.

The two sit close enough to combine comfortably in one day. Many visitors spend the morning in Medjugorje and the afternoon cooling off at Kravice, then drive back to the coast for dinner. A little cash in Bosnian convertible marks is handy for parking and cafes, though many places near the falls also take euros.

From Beach House Buinac in Brist, at the southern end of the Makarska Riviera, you are well placed for the trip: closer to the border than the bigger resorts further north, with the coastal road right on your doorstep. Head out early, see both, and be back on your terrace by sunset.
